Artist Statement

The following are two "add-ons" for the Mozilla Firefox browser. Add-ons are small pieces of software that can add new features or tiny tweaks to your Firefox. See below for installation instructions.

This work in a form of a Firefox add-on creates visual interventions into the web pages. The image of any given Web page (or the visible part of the Web page if it is bigger than the computer screen) is understood as a matrix that reproduces itself. The size, height, and width of the reproduction are transformed depending on the matrix. The reproduction is placed in a selected section of the matrix and becomes part of it. The process repeats several times. The result is an unrepeatable visual structure that is based on manipulations of the particular Web page.

This Firefox extension adds a combination of 3D animated Slovene and English letters of the alphabet to any web page. The individual letters appear or disappear as you type. Letters can also be moved, scatter across the page or line up, gradually or instantaneously.

I consider this work to be an on-line visual poem. Though there is a key element that differs from the historical visual poetry. In this work I tried to create a digital environment that facilitate and encourage human activity in a poetic way. By using any web page as a 'background' of the work I wish to enable the 'reader' to explore the work rather than just read/look at it. Many unpredictable meanings and visual phenomenas can emerge from the tension between an algorithmically defined behavior of letters and an unknown web page found due to a personal browsing habits.

Installation

Depending on your security settings, you may get the following yellow popup on your browser: "Firefox prevented this site (www.hyperrhiz.net) from asking you to install software on your computer." To remedy this, do the following:

• click on the button EDIT OPTIONS
• A dialog box will come up, with "www.hyperrhiz.net" in the address.
• Click on the button ALLOW, then close the dialog box.
• Retry the install link. This time you should get a dialog box listing the plugin. Click on INSTALL NOW.
• Once the plugin is installed, click to restart firefox.
• After you restart, the plugin controls will appear in a bar at the top of your browser.

Biography

Jaka ZŽeleznikar is an author of computational poetry and visual art based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Most of his (language based) works are bilingual, Slovene and English. His first book (poetry and short fiction) was published in 1994, from 1997 on he was involved in net art for couple of years. Currently he creates expressive add-ons for the Firefox browser. He presents his works internationally; selected festival and exhibition venues include: iCommons Summit, Patras - European Capital of Culture in 2006, Moderna galerija, Göteborg Art Museum, ICA, ZKM).
